Description
Low air pressure out in the Atlantic sends in big waves to pound the coast and in March and April westerly and north-westerly winds bring dramatic, squally showers that sweep in from the cold north Atlantic. Lord Palmerston, who was Prime Minister of Britain chose the spectacular cliffs that jut out into Donegal Bay and the equally dramatic profile of Benbulben mountain as the backdrop for his residence on his 10,000-acre Classiebawn estate. The castle was built in the Victorian-Baronial style that was fashionable in the 19th century. The building was completed in 1874, nine years after Lord Palmerston died.
